Innovative business centre in Germany’s east, in the heart of Europe
Capital Region Berlin Brandenburg
With 100,000 inhabitants Cottbus is the second largest city in the Federal State of Brandenburg and is located in the middle of the Lausitz Energy Region. The favourable location serves as a stepping stone to the flourishing capital Berlin and the “Saxon metropolis” Dresden.
Cottbus is the hub of several dynamic economic areas including Berlin-Brandenburg, Saxony and Poland. In 2012 the Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (BBI) will open. Both the BBI and the Dresden- Klotzsche Airports will be reachable in less than 60 minutes on the newly extended A13 and A15 Autobahn motorways.
Proximity to eastern European markets in Wroclaw, Poznan and Prague give Cottbus another competitive advantage.
Industrial Region with Tradition
The Lausitz region has been shaped by coal mining, refinement and conversion into electricity more than any other region in Germany. Cottbus is known by many as the energy city as this is not only due to the football team using the name. The surrounding Lausitz mining district provides a source of energy for the power plants in the region and is a major source of employment.
Major energy producers such as Vattenfall Europe Mining & Generation AG and the envia Mitteldeutsche Energie AG have their headquarters here. Lausitz has earned a reputation as an innovative pioneer with major projects in renaturation, urban redevelopment, renewables and alternative power generation.
New insights are transformed into impulses for development by the industries located in the “Lausitz real-life laboratory” (favourable natural atmosphere nurturing scientific advances).
