Lord Mayor
The Lord Mayor is
elected directly every eight years by the citizens. The last took place on October 22, 2006. Since November 30, 2006 Frank Szymanski (SPD) is Lord Mayor of the city of Cottbus.
The tasks of the Lord Mayor extend to three areas:
Highest representative of the city
The Lord Mayor is the representative of the city. He represents the city also legally effective outward, moreover he is a representative of the city in the local federations and in the Brandenburg and Association of German Cities and Towns .
Member of the city council meeting
The Lord Mayor is a member of the city council meeting and has there voting power. The 50 further members of the city council meeting are elected in separate elections every five years after lists by parties and voters unions.
Head of the city administration and leadership role in the "company city"
As head of the administration the Lord Mayor implements the decisions of the city council meeting. For all employees who are working in the offices, own establishments, authorities and in the city administration, the Lord Mayor is the supervisor. At selected subsidiary companies of the city the Lord Mayor performs the function of the chairman of the supervisory board. Furthermore he is represented in the supervisory boards of some associated company and in local administration unions.
